Rawa (Semolina) Upma Recipe

One of the most favorite breakfast eaten by people in India is Sooji /Rawa Upma - a warm, savory breakfast dish made from semolina, ghee, mustard seeds, and seasonal vegetables, gently spiced and deeply grounding.

Originating from the Southern states of India - its ideal for weight loss, packed with proteins and fiber , its Vata pacifying and soothes the nervous system and aids in digestion. The ghee in the recipe is especially great for people who have Vata dosha.

Prep Time : 20-25 mins

Serves : 2-3 people

You will need :

  • 1 cup organic semolina (rawa / sooji)

  • 1.5 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion

  • 1–2 tbsp white urad dal , chana dal (optional)

  • 5–6 curry leaves

  • 1/2 cup finely chopped carrots (optional)

  • Salt to taste (rock salt preferred)

  • 2–2.5 cups warm water

How to Prepare :

  • Dry roast the semolina in a pan over medium heat until fragrant and slightly golden. Set aside.

  • In the same pan, heat ghee. Add mustard seeds. Let them sizzle gently.

  • Add curry leaves, then sauté the chopped vegetables, white urad dal and chana dal until soft but not mushy.

  • Slowly pour in warm water and bring to a gentle simmer.

  • Stir in the roasted semolina slowly while stirring to avoid lumps.

  • Add salt, and continue stirring until it thickens and becomes soft. I prefer a little grainy texture, however you can continue to make it porridge like as well

  • Serve hot and have it alongside a hot beverage - I have mine with hot coffee.
